FaveroFood Consulting

Food regulatory consulting · Australia & New Zealand

Don’t let a label hold your product at the border.

I can check your labels, formulations and packaging against FSANZ — before you print, before you ship. With a decade in Australian food manufacturing, I can help with your compliance needs.

Independent consultant — you deal directly with a professional.

Example label review. Three issues found on this label:

  1. The panel has to declare sodium, not salt.
  2. Wheat is an allergen — it must be in bold.
  3. Whey is milk-derived. The milk source has to be declared.

Services

Three ways I can help

Scoped, practical work: a label checked before it goes to print, a formulation that has to change, a pack that has to carry the right marks.

Label review & compliance

A line-by-line check of your artwork against the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (FSANZ), before it goes to print or into a container.

  • Ingredient list accuracy and declaration order
  • Plain English Allergen Labelling (PEAL)
  • Country of Origin Labelling (CoOL)
  • Health Star Rating (HSR) calculation and display
  • Nutrition Information Panel (NIP)
  • Nutrition content and health claims
  • General Food Standards Code compliance

Formulation & NPD

Getting the product itself right — so the label has something compliant to describe.

  • Recipe and formulation review
  • Reformulation for compliance or cost
  • New product development support

Packaging consultation

What the pack itself has to carry, and what it is allowed to say.

  • Packaging compliance review
  • Format and claims guidance
  • Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) guidance

Who you are working with

A food technologist, not a call centre.

Ten years in the Australian food industry across multiple categories, on the manufacturing side — where a compliance decision has to survive a production line, a retailer spec and an audit, not just a document review.

You deal with me directly. I read your artwork, your specification and your ingredient declarations myself, and I tell you plainly what will pass and what won’t.

Italian, spoken properly

I’m a native Italian speaker. If you’re exporting or importing from Italy, we can work entirely in Italian — your technical file, your supplier declarations, your questions — and I’ll translate it into what the Food Standards Code actually requires.

Why it matters

Four in five import non-compliances are labelling issues.

Most of them are avoidable with a review before you ship. The figures below come from FSANZ and the Australian Department of Agriculture.

At the border

What stops imported food entering Australia.

  • 81.3%

of all imported food non-compliance cases in 2020 were labelling — 2,562 of 3,150, out of 152,289 tests conducted, 65,053 of them label checks.

  • 100%

of a producer’s future consignments can be referred for inspection after a failure, until a compliance history is re-established — five consecutive passes for surveillance food. One label mistake becomes an ongoing cost, not a one-off.

Once it’s on shelf

What sends Australian food back off it.

  • 38%

of the 92 food recalls FSANZ coordinated in 2025 were caused by undeclared allergens, mostly from labelling errors. The 10-year average is 87 recalls.

  • 50%

of all Australian food recalls between 2021 and 2025 were related to undeclared allergens and labelling issues.

Questions

How the work actually goes.

What people ask before they send anything over. If yours isn’t here, ask it directly — the form is the fastest way to reach me.

What do you need from me to review a label?

Your artwork, your product specification and your ingredient declarations. I read those myself rather than working from a summary — most of the findings that matter come from cross-checking the three against each other, not from any one of them alone.

When is the right time to get a label checked?

Before you commit to print, and before you ship. A review costs a fraction of a reprint, and once a consignment has been stopped the cost stops being a one-off — see the figures above.

Do you work with imported products, or only local manufacturing?

Both. The work is the same either way — your product has to satisfy the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code before it reaches a shelf here, whether it was made in Melbourne or landed in a container.

Can we work in Italian?

Entirely, if you prefer. I’m a native Italian speaker: your technical file, your supplier declarations and your questions can all stay in Italian, and I’ll translate them into what the Food Standards Code actually requires.

What if the problem is the product, not the label?

Then the label isn’t the thing to fix first. I also work on recipes and formulations — including reformulating for compliance or for cost — and on new product development, so the label has something compliant to describe.

What does a packaging consultation cover?

What the pack itself has to carry and what it’s allowed to say — compliance of the packaging format, guidance on claims, and the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL).

Am I dealing with you, or with an account manager?

With me. This is an independent consultancy, not an agency — the person reading your artwork is the person you spoke to, and the one who tells you plainly what will pass and what won’t.

Next step

Planning a product for Australia or New Zealand?

Tell me about it. We’ll work out the right level of label, formulation or packaging support before you commit to print or shipment.
